Hypermobility: Why Being "Too Flexible" Isn’t Always a Good Thing

Jay explaining Ligaments of a hypermobile client

Hi everyone, Jay here! I recently had the amazing opportunity to appear on Global News Edmonton on January 13th to discuss hypermobility, a condition that impacts joint stability and overall movement. As a personal trainer in Edmonton specializing in functional fitness and injury prevention, I’ve worked with many clients who struggle with hypermobility, and I’m passionate about helping them find the strength and stability they need to thrive.

What Is Hypermobility?

You’ve probably heard someone say they’re “double-jointed” or seen someone bend their body in ways that seem extraordinary. That’s an example of hypermobility, which occurs when ligaments in the joints are overly flexible. This condition exists on a spectrum, meaning it can range from mild to severe.

While being flexible might sound like a perk, hypermobility can cause challenges like joint pain, instability, and a higher risk of injuries. I often compare it to driving a car without proper struts—it might work for a while, but it’s not built for long-term stability.

Why Strength Training Is Essential for Hypermobility

If you’re dealing with hypermobility, strength training can make a world of difference. Building strong muscles around your joints can improve stability, reduce pain, and minimize the risk of injuries.

At J Fitness and Training, I focus on designing personalized fitness programs that cater to individual needs. For clients with hypermobility, I prioritize:

  • Joint stabilization exercises to improve control and function.

  • Low-impact strength training to prevent overloading the joints.

  • Functional fitness routines to help with daily activities and overall movement patterns.

Curious about how strength training can help? Check out my services page for detailed information on my personalized training programs designed to address hypermobility and other unique needs.

With the right approach, you can gain strength, move confidently, and reduce pain—even with hypermobility.
